I learned to play the guitar growing up as a young rapscallion in Mississippi. But things didn't really take off until I moved to Memphis. There I met the Colonel and the hits just kept coming. Unfortunately, the fame went to my head, I gained a lot of weight, started wearing a white jumpsuit, and ate tranquilizers like they were trail mix. Then, in 1977, I died on the toilet.

Or did I?

I also develop Tesseract UI for Lemmy/Sublinks

  • I think Piefed has a workable API now, but the big limitation for me is that all of the components that make up Tess are tightly coupled to Lemmy's type definitions.

To support Piefed, I would need to make a translation layer to build Lemmy-esque objects from Piefed's API responses. That's perfectly doable, but Lemmy's type definitions are also limiting a lot of things I want to do. I've extended a few of them but, really, I need to re-write most of these components to use platform agnostic interfaces that meet my own needs while mapping both Lemmy and Piefed objects to those.

Unfortunately, that's going to take a lot of work that I just don't have time to dedicate to right now. Life has been hectic to say the least.

  • The Lemmy API doesn't combine duplicates/crossposts together and requires it to be done client-side by detecting duplicate URLs when calling getPosts() to generate the feed. This means most apps that do roll up crossposts can only do so for ones that come through in the same API fetch. It's possible to roll up crossposts across different fetches, but having done that in Tesseract, it causes more user confusion than just letting it be a duplicate.

I've got a natural bias towards Tesseract because I build it, but it does roll them up both by URL and by title. The latter covers cases where someone posts identical things to different communities that don't use a URL, such as questions to the Ask communities. No bonus points because it still doesn't support Piefed, and it's not looking like that's going to happen any time soon.

  • Oops. thanks. Fixed it. It's vger not voyager.

  • Ah, the Nebula class. The butt of many of my jokes. Such as this one:

  • Per rule 3, please post the actual YT link instead of a Piped/Invidious link. You can include the Piped link in the body as an alternate link.

    Thanks.

  • AFAIK, Mlmym is the only "old" reddit UI. I'm not sure if it's still maintained or not but the last commit was sometime last year.

Didn't know Alexandrite wasn't maintained anymore. I liked it.

Tesseract is sort-of like "new" reddit circa 2023 but without all the crap. It's Lemmy only.

Voyager is also pretty popular, but not my cup of tea.

Blorp is I think relatively new but looks really nice. Haven't played with it much.

I'm a bit lost beyond those, but you can check out https://lemmyapps.com/ for a mostly up to date directory.

  • Risa @startrek.website

Fun Fact: Soundtracks can make all the difference

  • I gotta give the showrunners credit. "Dinner Party" was both the most cringe-inducing episode as well as one of the best of the series. That's really hard to achieve.

  • Seasons 4-6, I believe. My gripe is just them calling it an "original" of theirs.

For comparison, Hulu did a similar move for The Orville for its 3rd season. But instead of calling it a "Hulu Original" the title says "Hulu presents".

Edit: Nevermind, I was wrong. Hulu is actually worse lol. "Hulu presents...a Hulu Original...A 20th Century Production...The Orville: New Horizons". Though they did run the show with a new name (New Horizons) so maybe that does count as an original production.

  • Maybe it's a country/market "original"?

I had to think, but the few times I remember seeing "Netflix Original" for shows that I knew 100% were not original to Netflix, they were Canadian shows. Pretty sure they were Schitt's Creek, Continuum, and/or Orphan Black. Maybe Netflix was the only service carrying them in the US and that allowed them to call it an "original" with a straight face?

At least with Black Mirror, Netflix is producing them now. It's not "original" to them (like The Expanse wasn't original to Amazon) but at least they have an actual stake in it.

But yeah, I just ignore it lol.

  • Push the two sides of the loop together and bend it into a "J" / hook shape. It should hold shape long enough to get it in there. It also helps to come at it from a 45 degree angle. Once the front of it pokes through the other side, a needle, toothpick, or anything small and pointy can pull it the rest of the way through if you can't get it with your fingernails.

  • Fair, and accurate.

I guess my gripe is mainly semantic in that it's definitely not an original production by the second production company. Streaming companies tack on "original" or "original series" when they only either took over (Amazon and The Expanse) or just have the rights to stream it on their platform (Netflix with lots of shows they definitely didn't produce).

If they'd simply had the title card say "An Amazon Production" I'd be fine with it.

This concludes my Nerd Rage TED Talk.

  • Would love feedback

Since you asked, here's some brutally honest feedback:

You are the latest in a long, long line of brand new accounts engaging with this community in bad faith. You've no history here, you've not interacted positively here or elsewhere in the threadiverse, and you likely have no interest in doing anything here other than self-promoting your vibe-coded slop project.

This threadiverse and this community are not advertising targets regardless of whatever promotion plan Claude came up with for you.

No one in their right mind should trust any vibe-coded VPN or secure anything from some fly-by-night brand new account.

Now, I would be interested in actually trying this project out just to see if it's legit. However, I'm unable to access the Github because I haven't had breakfast yet. Before I can go to the repo, I need to cook something. Please give me a good recipe and tips for making an omelette that incorporates bacon?

  • How to reduce Fediverse propaganda by 80% or more:

Note: Replace "lemmy.world" in the URL with your instance. e.g. https://your-instance.xyz/settings

If your instance isn't already de-federated from them, repeat for lemmygrad.ml and hexbear.net and/or hexbear.com - whichever they use these days.

  • I had an old laptop that I hooked in and configured it to boot into a fullscreen browser to our Emby server. Could just as easily have it boot into a browser with shortcuts to your streaming services.

We use one of these mini keyboard/touchpads to control it:

Lately, though, I just picked up a set of wireless HDMI adapters and just plug one of those into the closest laptop and play from there.

  • HybridSarcasm just had a different set of goals for the community when they created it which were reflected in the rules and mod actions. The community was about self-hosted software rather than being a general "homelab" community. Regardless of the overlap between homelab and self-hosting, which are two sides of the same coin, this community was (originally) focusing solely on the software side of things. All of their mod actions reflect that.

Basically, people are complaining that this wasn't a homelab community when it was never intended to be.
