  • It looks like the rate of searches starts going up around January 2026 though, middle of winter in the northern hemisphere. Unless Australia was having a heat wave? They're probably prone to dizziness anyway being upside down all the time

  • Seconding what several other have said, I think country- and region-specific communities are valuable if they're specifically solarpunk in nature.

If we're an 'explicitly migration-friendly movement,' country-specific communities are a great tool to help people navigate migration and connect with their new local solarpunks like SargonOfACAB and Andy pointed out. Like Chewie and SargonOfACAB suggested there's other types of posts too, like local events or something related to a specific food or culture, that are interesting to fellow solarpunks because of the country they relate to more than the topic they would fit under.

I agree with keepthepace and Andy re xenophobia too, if we want to overcome it and even the very notion of nation states then having country- or region-specific communities that explicitly reject those ideas and build something better is a step in a good direction. We can retire the communities once the nation states no longer exist ;) I could see regional communities of a few countries each working for this as long as one country doesn't take up all the oxygen (see keepthepace's comment).

What you said about the language moderation challenges totally makes sense, that seems like a separate issue. Would be stoked if any multilingual mods ever joined the team. If people have an option to make a community for solarpunks on a country-specific instance instead of a country-specific community here that seems just as good, but if they'd rather be here or don't have a better option seems like we should welcome it.

  • This is an article about a Lancet commission that took a pretty global lens, first sentence points out it's "a nearly ubiquitous global commercial enterprise"

worldwide, 46 percent of adults (approximately 2.3 billion people) and nearly 18 percent of adolescents (159.6 million youths between 10 and 19 years old) have gambled in the past year

Although only a small proportion of individuals engage in problem gambling—an addiction that affects an estimated 1.4 percent of gamblers, or 80 million adults globally—the researchers recommend that policymakers treat gambling as a public health issue rather than as a medical problem

Although four-fifths of countries worldwide permit gambling, that number understates the global nature of the industry’s influence, since digital technology transcends borders.

  • Also seeing what happens when one country changes a policy is a great way to learn about the impacts of your county's policies. Like if somebody had shown asbestos caused cancer in lab rats you shouldn't go 'why should I know this, I'm not a rat' and keep using asbestos in everything (in reality it was textile workers dying who first clued us in to asbestos).

The US might be a pretty diseased lab rat but there's still something to be learned from it.

  • Yeah come on 76/89ths would be silly because 89 is prime and 76 is even, it would obviously be rounded to 55/64ths
