  • I think everyone has a different opinion on what an ebook reader "should" be. A person at work has a Xteink X4 and they have been selling like hot cakes. Screen is a bit small.

    Im just glad we have options.

  • Im hoping the diptyx will be the "repairable ebook reader" that ive been looking for. Its just a couple of screws in theory and parts that you can get in bulk.

    But the best ebook reader is the one you already own :D.

  • 100%. Its a book series that is special. Not always great, but has some dips. But then you get to the great parts...

    Its one of the reasons I call it a book soap. For me its Ryoka. It wasn't until WAAAAY later that I find her tolerable. But the chapters with her were such slogs for me.

    But Skinner, the chess club, really got me into the series. And I am very glad for it.

    Then later Tears of Liscor. Some of the best emotional feels that I have read.

    I personally like Gravesong a bit better on the audio-book side of things. The series has a much different feel than the original TWI. More compact and punchy if that makes sense. And Andrea Parsneau is a treasure! Shes as good (if not better) as Jeff Hays.

  • Yep! I got it sometime around 2013 I want to say? Maybe even late 2012. I went over to NewPower99.com and got a Amazon Kindle D01100 Battery Replacement Kit earlier in the year. The battery lasted for 13ish years but was starting to show signs of age. ONLY would last a day on a full charge. Now it lasts about 2 weeks. 1 month with casual usage.

    Ill be honest, it was a bit difficult to get into the back. And the battery was STUCK! The glue they used on mine was rock solid. I don't have a heat gun so I ended up using a screwdriver and using an old technique to pry the battery off. Very dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. Luckly nothing broke and the kindle now has an extended lifespan for another 10+ years. Sometimes I wish that battery powered ebook readers were still a thing... I have a ton of rechargables at the house.

    I see kindle 3s at the thrift stores all the time. And then they get bought real quick too. Good on ya

  • Oh yeah I forgot this was about the same time chromebooks came out. Still some good came out of it and they apparently are still around haha.

    Solar is a better option I agree. The hand crank really only works for VERY low power devices. Even then, I remember hooking one of those up to a multimeter. You dont get much.

  • OMG I remember the OLPC! I had one back a LONG time ago. It was soooo sloooww. But it turned heads when I brought it into the linux meetups. I didnt even think of using it as an ebook reader!

    Im also kinda sad it never took off. Like it ha extra screws and parts INSIDE it for crying out loud.

  • Most of it is. Theres a good portion on cloudflare. Linux its over 4% on desktop marketshare when filtering. Which sounds correct. But the rest of the article is just as you say.

    I wonder if cloudflare includes chrome os, specialty linux distros, ect... are pulling the numbers one way or another?

  • Unrelated, do you mind if i schedule up some unique/strange/custom ebook readers for the community? Ive done some open source work over the years for ebook readers. Putting them on some strange divices. Just once a day at most.

  • Ill let you know once i have it in my hand. But it looks like its just a few screws and everything is replaceable.

    I may make a metal version but im not certain until i see it in my hands. Supposed to get it sometime late august/sept.

  • Its actually been around for a while. Quite a few people have made it, although it became harder after the pandemic. Ive wanted one for a while but im planning on getting the dipix sibce its a bit more novel.
