  • Yeah I do think we're in a interesting period right now in the US, we're past the "reflexively suppressed because it's unheard of" part of things and into the "a small but extremely vocal minority of hateful people are attacking us precisely because we're more visible and accepted" part.

    Obviously things can and probably will get bad before they get better, but pretty much everything that has recieved this kind of moral panic backlash has only gotten more mainstream as a result. (See: rock music, D&D, kink, socialism, witchcraft, tattoos, etc.)

  • For those of us who are lower income, yeah, if the prices go up we simply don't buy them.

    Just like poor people don't own homes.

    But rich people still buy them (homes and pokémon cards) and so poor people are permanently priced out of the market, which is bad.

    (In case anyone's confused, i'm making fun of nonsensical laws here - I don't think children should be getting married, especially to adults. I'm just pointing out how, at least in US law in some states, the "age of consent laws" don't seem to be about consent at all, actually, seeing as marriage is a loophole in the law.)

  • I will say that it isn't usually like this.

    I mean there's always drama somewhere but this drama is especially big because a LOT of people found out all at once that either:

    1. their content feeds were being censored/manipulated without their knowledge

    Or

    1. They were being shadowbanned (either as an individual or because their home server was censored)

    by a developer who went to some pretty incriminating lengths to obfuscate the censorship he was baking into a tool that lots of people were using.

    Most of the time I look at my memes and the drama passes me right by. It's there if you look for it, of course, but this particular snafu is a bit of an outlier.
