  • The claim about Ortega canceling elections really stood out to me as an intentional lie. I even saw him misquoted in Spanish by El País. There is a video clip at the top of the article where you can clearly hear Ortega say “no volveráN a ver elecciones” (they won’t see elections again) in reference to far-right coup plotters specifically. The article text however quotes him as saying “no volverá a haber elecciones” (there won’t be any more elections). It’s really sneaky, because phonologically the only difference is that N sound in volverán, which is clearly audible in the video, so stripped of context the misquote could be played off as an honest mistake if called out, but I think it’s intentional. Then the fake quote gets translated into English for CNN/NYT etc and nobody reading that suspects that he might not have ever said “there will be no more elections” because they present it as a literal quote.

There’s something really sad about somebody dying and their loved ones answering the question of “who was he” by rattling off a list of his favorite brands. Like really sad.

  • Does anybody have a screenshot of the original tweet? I never heard exactly what she said, I only saw her lame non-apology letter.

  • A few thousand troops seems like plenty to maintain order at a festival in a city with 100,000 men women and children, many of whom probably didn’t have strong feelings one way or the other about Jesus or might have sided with him over the religious establishment. More soldiers could be called up from nearby if really necessary. All we know for sure is Pilate was the one with the legal authority to carry out execution and he chose to do it in the particularly Roman style of crucifixion.

  • Simply put, the article you link is wrong. 2.5 million number should have been a big red flag, actual estimates for the population of Jerusalem in those times are 20 to 30 thousand, swelling to 100,000 or more during the passover festival but still an order of magnitude lower than that article is claiming.

  • I don’t think he took a clear stance that this is all going to work out as an unambiguous win for the US, he’s just giving a theory for what the strategy is.

  • Not only that but reindustrializing for real (if it could actually be done) also potentially brings back a lot of the power of the proletariat as a class, that’s why the capitalists de industrialized America in the first place.

  • Eternal Darkness is that GameCube horror game with kooky effects to make the player feel like they’re going insane.

  • Ok they did bomb some power plants already though, no? I think his latest threat of “power plant day and bridge day all wrapped up in one” is referring to bombing events that have already transpired and saying Tuesday will be worse than all that put together.

  • Sounds awful, you’d have to pay me at least 5 times that much to do something like that.
