Hexbear's resident machinist, absentee mastodon landlord, jack of all trades

Talk to me about astronomy, photography, electronics, ham radio, programming, the means of production, and how we might expropriate them.>

  • I currently run systemd (on Gentoo, one of the few distros where you can actually choose an alternative). Been using Linux since before systemd existed, so I've used various kinds of SysV-style init systems before. I generally like systemd. Though it might be over-engineered for some use cases, desktop / laptop OSes are among the most complex, having to deal with events like lids closing, batteries draining, suspend / hibernate, etc. Parallelization and socket activation are very nice features.

I would like to try GNU Shepherd (and the whole GUIX System Distribution in general) but I could never get it to boot on my machine (volume inside encrypted LVM)

  • I don't even think their thought process is that developed. They don't recognize the systemic violence of the police state and carceral machine as authoritarian. This is fully abstract to them. When abuses of power are so egregious that they actually make the news, they consider it incidental. As far as Liberals are concerned, the purpose of a system is not what it does, but what it's charter says. You could have death camps scattered all across the country, but as long as it is done under the aegis of "the department of justice," they will be more concerned that the image of all these crematoria are undermining the institution's mission.

  • Wait, PJ is gone?

  • At this point, it isn't even clear what Mint's purpose is. The thing which made their distribution unique is now an albatross of technical debt. It sounds like they have already dug their own grave.

  • I'm generally pro distributions-steamrolling-upstream but this is a solid counter-argument. If you're going to make substantial ham-fisted modifications to a piece of software you're distributing, you have to own it. You can't claim it is upstream's product when you are deliberately ripping out all the improvements they're making and undermining their work. There is a long precedent for this too. For many years, Debian distributed long term support versions of Firefox, and Mozilla was not happy about their branding being used on these packages (versions they no longer supported themselves), so Debian re-branded it to IceWeasel. (Eventually this conflict was resolved with the introduction of Firefox-ESR).

  • I assure you this is not what chili dogs look like when they come out the back end

  • Who would win? A quarter-million kilos of rocket fuel, or one sparky boi? (the answer might surprise you)

  • It won't help at all, but the idea of wearing a cycling bib in a bucket seat is making me grin.
