  • If this had been closed source, the attacker would not have been able to use the technique to commit the changes in the first place.

No need for speculation we have such a real equivalent.

The SolarWinds Cyberattack Explained: Hack, Victims, and Key Facts

Both are supply chain attacks and the proprietary world let it go farther. They both highlight vulnerabilities. There are going to be small and important FOSS projects that have burnt out maintainers, and possibly few eyes on. In principal someone should be getting paid to keep things safe in closed land, but security is a cost center and an easy cut for the MBAs in charge of things.

  • It exists as part of your argument in court. The gos helps you enforce your right and catch them in the cookie jar if they try to be slick. At least that is how I think of it.... Or used to in more normal times.

  • Lemmy is a place of idealism. Which don't get me wrong is great, but it does mean no practically and often detriment to the changes they want to see in society.

  • MC is inherently dangerous and having car people mandate I act like one and not let me filter in red lights and jams putting in me in extra danger and lowering down traffic. In form yourself... Dipshit.

  • Maintenance and repairing are easy as fuck, parts are cheap and easy to find

This is a key part here. Often the cars that meet these are not as sexy and get looked over.

  • Ohh for sure. That is also my position. I was just pointing out that people do not pick a car for the entertainment, but it can sway a purchase. An auto maker that keeps an open platform might have a stronger third party market that helps sway people into their cars, so even in their "we are trying to maximize our profits" still have a reasoning for it. Of course good luck telling senior management.

  • You know it might make sense for automotive. The car is the product after all. The quality of the engine is ultimately what drives sales and most of the entertainment is traditionally third party. Making the on board stuff open helps them make a platform for third parties that are safe from manufacturer trying to push them out or collect fees. That environment also helps the manufacturer in its own sales as their cars are where the cultural impact is.

Lemmy is just highly opinionated, poor social skills, and often closed minded.

  • Lamo at your whole point. Total crab brain. So my transport is able to filter but your feelings want me stuck in traffic and vulnerable to a rear end? Talk about self centered...
