How do you get better at communicating your thoughts in discussions?

Practice explaining things to others.

Pause a lot during your explanation and, if you can, get them to parrot back what you're explaining so you can see how they are understanding it.

Ask them questions as you explain it.

Draw it out or use some kind of graphical way of showing what you're talking about.

Try to explain it in a way that accounts for their motivations.

There's two things I've found that happen if there is a loop in the conversation.

They aren't getting the causal implications. At that point, it is important to stop and ask if there was anything said earlier in the conversation that was unclear where they are asking the same question again. It starts to put them on the spot because you're rejecting their question and forcing them to rearticulate their question. It isn't enough that you're saying something, but that they're listening.
They don't like the argument but they don't have a good response to tell you so they're hoping to wear you down. At this point, there isn't anything you can do to convince them so it is more laying out the consequences, protecting yourself, and moving forward. Drop all pretense at convincing them. If the chain of command needs to get involved, get it involved.

I've judged engineering competitions. A lot of the rules can seem to be needlessly complicated, especially to non-engineers. Every competition has usually required amending the rules for next year because several teams bent the rules to win.

I imagine the law is like that but worse.

My understanding, and this is very basic and not well understood, is that the research is only really starting to probe this topic and some issues may be related to the neurospiciness of some people.

To use a machine related metaphor, I don't know if they've figured out if the issue is with the sensor, the wiring from the sensor, or the control board not being wired to read the sensor. It could also be a mix of different reasons that just happens to show to in a set of people.

It is a long winded way of saying I don't have an answer to your question.

Silicon Valley kind of encourages maximalism. Companies are expected to grow and it is hard to grow beyond the monopoly you've built for yourself.

Also, not everyone is willing to take the deal where you go retire with your ballerina wife to go become a wildlife photographer. Some people like being a businessman.

The idea that humans only have five senses is crap and a lot of those senses are ways to help self regulate. And it turns out that, as people can have bad eyesight or the ability to smell things, people can also be bad at those self regulating senses.

It isn't a conscious choice, but something where I'll identify that I want to do a certain activity when I have free time or I find myself coalescing around a set of interests. I'll make the choice or find that I'm changing what I picked based on different tasks at work.

I don't think of the reasons when I make the choice, but I do recognize the trend after I've made the choice. It has also helped me recognize when to park certain hobbies that I'm working on because I know I'll come back to them, but I know my mind needs something else and it is better to let my mind go for something different than to burn out completely on one hobby because I killed the joy I had in it.

So, first, you have the question of what humanity does. You'd need a plan on how to respond immediately in order to keep some form of world order. You'll likely see a division between two groups of people, those who believe they are working towards survival and those who don't.

I don't expect a unified response to survival, but I expect they will probably try to not stop on each other's toes unless absolutely necessary. These are going to be the nations that raise armies and the manufacturing base necessary to go to war or flee.

To those populations who don't see hope, I expect a rapid decent into chaos. Social order collapses and it is likely that those with a survival mentality have to soft land the chaos parts of the world. This likely includes raiding in order to take equipment and shut down dangerous facilities. Any defenders likely get co-opted by the survivor group.

At six months, it is likely that billions are dead in the chaos zones as their ability to sustain their populations collapse. The survivor groups are likely highly militarized and poised for a response that isn't needed. I expect, after some debate, that the survivor groups further expand into the chaos lands for resources to feed their machine. The machine is still kept ready for a few years, a debate occurring as to the necessary readiness but still considered a necessity for the next few years.
