  • I’m surprised I haven’t heard this happening from my teens. They’re not especially into junk or fast food, but do like lean proteins: eating an entire rotisserie chicken each would be entirely consistent, and cheaper.

    The only unrealistic thing here is that I almost never see that many chickens out on the warming shelves at one time

    • but that means I can now attack you next time around
    • you can no longer attack me (assuming more than two people playing)

    So if you hit me with “draw 2”, I can hit you with “reverse”, then next turn can make you “draw 2”

  • So true. When we had our second kid, we found the cost of daycare for two younger ones was approaching her salary as a teacher. That’s ridiculous. Luckily I made enough to support us and she always said she didn’t mind staying home to care for them, but most people probably can’t afford that

  • Supposedly “The Villages” in Florida has phased life care where you can live in a setting for the care you need, then move up to more care as needed.

    This is directly from a friend, so I don’t know the facts behind it, but also the claim that it makes in-home care much cheaper. You not only have appropriate settings for the care you need but there’s a lot of them in one spot, and of course it’s Florida so the caregivers are probably exploited to hell and back, so it’s all cheaply available.

    While there’s a lot of negativity to that specific retirement area, I really think they have something by doing it at scale

    At one point when we were kids, we were grounded for whatever reason and really really wanted to go play in the woods behind our house.

    • the four of us snuck out the basement door
    • one at a time, sprint to cover behind the pool
    • then one at a time mad dash from the pool to cover in the woods.

    I made it first and ducked behind the compost pile for cover. Apparently I woke the hive

    My little brother almost made it but stopped short and started swatting at his pants

    My other younger brother started screaming and ran off toward the house.

    Yeah, my older brother and I were the little shits laughing at our brothers’ pain

  • As counterpoint, I know at least a couple home daycares, which were more convenient and less expensive for their customers but:

    • my aunt had an unhealthy basement rec room after multiple floods, and was not very mobile
    • an old college friend had gone conservative and refused to either get Covid vaccinations or to require any vaccinations of their customers. Can you imagine if you found out you were sending your kids to a germ factory where any kid could have anything? Or could you imagine something happening and then to find that out?

    I’m more confident that a larger daycare at least has someone actively watching and comply with health mandates

  • Depends on what you mean by tipping point and it’s an important distinction.

    You are right that we are not only stuck with climate change but have zoomed past the target that might have left reasonably adaptable changes. We’re leaving a real challenge for the next generation. But if that’s the result and civilization survives the resulting instability, the climate should recover for our great grandchildren.

    The bigger challenge is “tipping point”. I don’t know if that’s what you meant but there are a series of projected climatic tipping points that will not only make things markedly worse for humans but are permanent (on the scale of human civilization). I don’t believe we’re able to predict any with any accuracy but I recall a prediction that were already greater than 50% of having triggered at least one. These are things like AMOC collapse, melting of Greenland glaciers, melting west Antarctic ice shelf, etc

    We’ve seen in the news repeatedly this summer the Greenland ice sheet melting faster than ever, causing a slowdown of AMOC currents …. So they also build on each other and we don’t yet know whether/when the tipping point is locked in, when there’s no longer any hope of preventing it
