Because these owls rely on waterways (like reservoirs or forested streams) for their diet of fish and frogs, they have to be highly communicative. When perched face-to-face, especially during the transition to dusk, they communicate through a variety of soft, hollow hoots or wailing screams to coordinate hunting duties or look after their young.
